'Marriage Story' wins big at 2019 Gotham Awards

Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Marriage Story was the big winner at the 2019 Gotham Awards with the Netflix film taking home multiple honors.

The drama, about a married couple headed towards divorce, won Best Feature, Best Screenplay for Noah Naumbach who also directed, Best Actor for star Adam Driver and the Audience Award.

The Farewell, Uncut Gems, Hustlers and Waves were also nominated for Best Feature.

Awkwafina won Best Actress for her role in The Farewell over Florence Pugh in Midsommar, Elisabeth Moss in Her Smell, Mary Kay Place in Diane and Alfre Woodard in Clemency. Driver had won Best Actor over Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse, Aldis Hodge in Clemency and Andre Holland in High Flying Bird.

American Factory won Best Documentary, Laure De Clermont-Tonnerre won the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for The Mustang and Taylor Russell won Breakthrough Actor for Waves.

On the television side, When They See Us won Breakthrough Series - Long Format over Chernobyl, Unbelievable, My Brilliant Friend and David Makes Man. PEN15 won Breakthrough Series - Short Format over Russian Doll, Ramy, Tuca & Bertie and Undone.

Ava DuVernay received the Directors Tribute with Laura Dern being honored with the Actress Tribute and Sam Rockwell with the Actor Tribute.

The 2019 Gotham Awards took place on Monday at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The event honors independent films and television series.
