The 16-year-old from Pennsylvania became Fortnite's first solo world champion during an event on Sunday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Giersdorf beat out other pro players and famous streamers to earn the largest payout ever for a single player in an esports tournament.

Giersdorf said on Today that he spends six hours each day practicing Fortnite but is still able to complete homework and earn good grades.

Giersdorf, when asked about his Bugha nickname, said it comes from his grandfather. "My grandpa gave me the name when I was a baby," he said.

Fortnite, from developer Epic Games, had its Battle Royale mode released in September 2017. The title has become one of the most popular video games in the world.

Fortnite is a competitive online multiplayer game where players attempt to shoot their way to victory by being the last survivor out of 100. Construction is also involved as players can build on the fly mini-bases and walls for protection.
