PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender have been added to the list of honorees at this year's Palm Springs International Film Festival. Vikander, for her supporting role in The Danish Girl, will receive the festival's Rising Star Award while Fassbender will be presented with the Male International Star Award for his starring role in Steve Jobs.

The two performers join previously announced 2016 award winners director Tom McCarthy, Brie Larson, Johnny Depp, Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan.
"In The Danish GIrl, Alicia Vikander delivers a superb performance as Gerda Wegener, the wife of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe," festival chairman Harold Matzner said of the Rising Star Award winner, Variety reports. "She projects so much love and pain as she goes on a journey with Lili during an era when there was no precedent for it. Gerda's own transformation as a character speaks to the story's themes of courage and self-acceptance."
Of Fassbender, Matzner said in a press release the actor, "has brought to life riveting performances on the screen in films such as Hunger, Shame, 12 Years A Slave, Inglorious Basterds and Prometheus."
"In his latest film, Steve Jobs, Fassbender delivers another stunning performance of subtlety and power, presenting the Apple co-founder as both a witty and engaging person and a conflicted Machiavellian. For his masterful performance in this film, we are honored to present Michael Fassbender with the 2016 International Star Award, Actor," he added.
Saoirse Ronan was previously announced as 2016's recipient of the Female International Star Award.
The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala will be hosted by Mary Hart on Jan. 2.
