LOS ANGELES, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Justin Bieber says he's still in love with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

The 21-year-old Canadian singer spoke about his feelings for the 23-year-old American actress in an interview with Access Hollywood. Bieber and Gomez were an on-again, off-again couple for several years but officially broke up in 2014.

"It was really tough," the star said of their split. "I don't know if I'm over it yet. I think that I'm definitely in another place, and I think we've definitely went our separate ways. I love her, and I want her to be awesome, but there are things that remind me of her."

"I'm never going to stop loving her," he asserted. "I'm never going to stop checking in on her. I don't think if you end a relationship, you should end that, unless it was super toxic ... We always respected each other, and we still respect each other."

Bieber believes he and Gomez should "do some soul searching" before they consider a possible future together. The actress also admitted to having love for her ex in an interview with French radio station NRJ about her song "The Heart Wants What It Wants" in December.

"I definitely have so much respect and love for him," she said. "People everywhere feel this feeling [of 'The Heart Wants What It Wants.'] They should understand when anybody goes through that. They just can't help what they want and [who] they love."

Bieber will release his fourth studio album, Purpose, on Nov. 13, and revealed at least three songs on the record are about Gomez. The actress last released Revival in October and is slated for The Big Short with Christian Bale and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with Zac Efron.
