LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The highly anticipated season premiere of CBS' Big Bang Theory kicked off Monday night with leading characters Penny and Leonard eloping on a secret rendezvous.

Running away to Vegas, the couple -- played by Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting and Johnny Galecki -- tied the knot without their friends at their sides and struggled through some rocky realizations, when details of Leonard's past affair comes to light.

Despite going through with their quickie ceremony, Penny and Leonard don't get romantic after the newly husband cannot freely carry his bride through the door.

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, the rest of the Big Bang Theory crew is forced to sit around the television and witness their best friends' wedding. Viewers are then reintroduced to Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy's (Mayim Bialik) relationship, which appears to be on the rocks. Last season's finale left their relationship status up-in-the-air, and as season nine premiere's, viewers see their relationship crumbling down into a dramatic full-on breakup.

As the show carries on, Sheldon's mother enters the mix as a voice of reason, encouraging her son to hold on to the ring he acquired for Amy for Amy a while longer.

The somber episode blind-sided viewers, but sets up the plot for how the brainy gang will tackle complex relationship issues within their group. For starters, Leonard and Penny return to their respective apartments quickly after saying their vows, leaving the former spending his wedding night with roommate and newly-broken-up-with Sheldon instead.

Big Bang Theory airs Monday nights on CBS.
