'Mama' is No. 1 in weekend box office

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- The supernatural thriller "Mama" was No. 1 at the box office this weekend with $28.1 million.

The horror film stars Jessica Chastain, who is also the star of "Zero Dark Thirty," which came in at No. 2 with $17.6 million.

"Silver Linings Playbook" came in third with $11.4 million.

"Gangster Squad," starring Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin, came in fourth with $9.1 million. "Broken City," was fifth with $9 million.

"A Haunted House," was No. 6 with $8.3 million; "Django Unchained," No. 7 with $8.2 million; "Les Miserables" was No. 8 with $7.8 million; "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" No. 9 with $6.4 million.

"The Last Stand," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville, took the No. 10 spot with $6.3 million.

Batmobile sells for $4.62 million

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- The Batmobile used in the 1960s "Batman" television show sold for $4.62 million at a classic car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., officials said.

Rick Champagne, from the Phoenix-area, bought the car Saturday night at the Barrett-Jackson auction, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Champagne told Speed TV he had his eye on the Batmobile "ever since I was a kid. I had a toy model of it."

The Batmobile was created by car customizer George Barris, who bought the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car for $1 from Ford and turned it into Batman's iconic ride.

"I saw the script and it said, 'Bang,' 'Pow,' 'Boom,'" Barris, now 87, said in an interview before the auction. "That's exactly what I wanted the car to do. I wanted it to be as big a character as the actors."


'Big Brother' stars tie the knot

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Former "Big Brother" stars Dominic Briones and Daniele Donato were married Saturday in California, attendees said.

The ceremony was held at the Newland House Museum in Huntington Beach in front of about 120 guests. Donato wore an Anthropologie wedding dress, People magazine reported.

The couple met while the two were filming the U.S. reality TV series "Big Brother" in 2011.

"Truth be told, I really didn't like him at first," Donato was quoted as saying. "I thought he was a little troublemaker. But we became friends, and although I didn't like him like that, it just grew." 


The two fell in love after the finale was taped, Donato said. Briones proposed to Donato at the St. Louis Zoo.


Pakistani singer Mehnaz Begum dies at 55

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Renowned Pakistani singer Mehnaz Begum died in Bahrain after suffering from respiratory problems. She was 55.

Begum died Saturday while making her way to the United States for health treatment, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.

The the daughter of popular sub-continental singer Kajjan Begum, Mehnaz Begum sang in a variety of genres including ghazal, thumri, dadra, khayal and drupad and had a number of songs featured in films and television.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday offered their condolences over Begum's death, The News International reported.

Zardari called Begum a loss to the music industry prayed for her eternal peace.
