The Hollywood Reporter said Scorsese called his latest mob-movie triumph a project that started out as a "traditional cop-gangster movie," that turned into "something else."

Other winners included 10-year-old Abigail Breslin and teenager Paul Dano for best young actress and actor for "Little Miss Sunshine," while Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson won the best supporting actor and actress honors.
