LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Jeremy Irons won supporting actor in a miniseries or movie for HBO's "Elizabeth I" at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.
Veteran director Louis J. Horvitz grabbed a trophy for last year's Academy Awards telecast.
"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" took its second award of the night for best writing for a comedy, musical or variety series.
"I have a made a decision," said Stewart in his acceptance speech, "right now to kill Bob Newhart."
Emcee Conan O'Brien joked at the beginning of the telecast that Newhart was being kept in a chamber with a limited air supply that would run out if the show ran long.
Stewart gave a special "shout out" to the contenders from "The Colbert Report," lead by former "Daily Show" correspondent Stephen Colbert.
Andre Braugher was named best actor in a miniseries or movie for his role in the FX network's "Thief," and "Monk" star Tony Shalhoub won his second Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series for the cable USA Network.
The outstanding made-for-TV movie went to HBO's "The Girl in the Cafe," and "The Amazing Race" won its fourth consecutive award for CBS in the reality TV category.
