Entertainment Weekly's Top 10 sidekicks

NEW YORK, July 14 (UPI) -- Entertainment Weekly has released its list of the 50 greatest sidekicks, including Ed McMahon, Chewbacca, Ethel Mertz and Samwise Gamgee.

The No. 1 greatest sidekick spot was given to McMahon for being Johnny Carson's partner on "The Tonight Show."

Batman's right-hand man, Robin, comes in at No. 2, while George Costanza gets the No. 3 spot for being loyal to comedian Jerry Seinfeld on "Seinfeld."

"Star Wars'" most cuddly character, Chewbacca, comes in at No. 4, for being Han Solo's sidekick and Ethel Mertz nabs the No. 5 spot for helping pal Lucy Ricardo out of trouble on "I Love Lucy."

Dr. John Watson, Sherlock Holmes' fictional chronicler, comes in at No. 6 while Samwise Gamgee from "Lord of the Rings" is given the No. 7 spot for undying loyalty to fellow hobbit Frodo Baggins, said Entertainment Weekly.

Ed Norton comes in at No. 8 for his role as Ralph Kramden's sidekick in "The Honeymooners" and Tatoo is given the No. 9 spot for being sidekick to "Fantasy Island's" Mr. Roarke.

Rounding out the top tier on Entertainment Weekly's greatest sidekicks list is Dwight Schrute, Michael Scott's sidekick on the BBC series "The Office."
