Millions saw Live 8 on BBC

LONDON, July 4 (UPI) -- The BBC reports its live coverage of the Live 8 concerts attracted an audience that peaked at 9.6 million Saturday evening.

The average audience for the concerts was 6.6 million. BBC1 began broadcasting the concerts in late afternoon British time.

In other statistics, Pink Floyd's album sales soared by more 1,300 percent after their well-publicized reunion for the London concert. Sales of The Who and Madonna albums also got a significant boost.

And the BBC received a total of 400 complaints about swearing by performers, including Madonna and Snoop Dogg. Because the network did not use a time delay, everything that was said on stage reached the audience, some of it before the 9 p.m. break-point for adult content.

The BBC issued an apology.

The 10 concerts were organized by rocker turned philanthropist Sir Bob Geldof to dramatize poverty in Africa on the eve of the Group of Eight meeting in Scotland.
