Producers' touring companies close

NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- The two touring companies of Mel Brooks' "The Producers" are packing their trunks and going home.

Variety reports that the first company, named Max after one of the show's leads, put on its last performance in Pittsburgh in January. It opened in Pittsburgh in 2002.

The second company, "Leo" after the other lead, ends its run in Japan in July after opening in Boston in 2003.

The two companies played a total of 221 weeks, bringing in $220 million. A third company was planned, but that tour has now been postponed until at least next year.

Meanwhile, the original show continues to do well on Broadway, where its jokes about Nazis and its gay humor are more at home than in the provinces.

The show has brought in more than $220 million in box office receipts and played almost 1,700 performances.
