Wife of missing actor-writer still hopeful

NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A week after she reported his disappearance from Long Island, New York, Kathie Russo remains hopeful her celebrated husband Spalding Gray is still alive.

Monday Gray officially becomes a missing person Monday in the eyes of New York police, The New York Post reported Sunday.

Since June 2001, when he fractured his skull and hip in a car crash in Ireland, life had been difficult for the 62-year-old Gray.

The metal plate implanted in his head as a result of the accident left a massive scar across his forehead. And a torn sciatic nerve affected his walking.

At 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, Gray went to his regular psychiatrist appointment in Manhattan. He had been feeling better and gone off antidepressants, Russo said.

Saturday, Jan. 10, he left to visit a friend in the neighborhood, but never arrived. He had $120 cash and his American Express card with him.

About four hours later, he called and spoke to son Theo, saying, "Just checking in. Be there soon. Love you." That was the last anyone is known to have heard from him. Police said they will consider Spalding officially missing on Monday and will launch a search.
