LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Darkhorse nominee Tony Shaloub bested a six-man field including veterans Ray Romano, Matt LeBlanc and Eric McCormick to win his first Emmy Sunday night.
Shaloub won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of a quirky, germ-o-phobic detective on the USA Network show, "Monk." It was Shaloub's first Emmy nomination.
Edie Falco's character on HBO's "The Sopranos" had a rough year, but it paid off for the actress with the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress on a Drama Series.
Her series' husband, James Gandolfini also won Outstanding Lead Actor on a Drama Series.
"Steven Spielberg Presents: Taken", which aired on the Sci Fi Channel, was named Outstanding Miniseries.
Actor/comedian Bill Cosby was honored by the Academy with the Bob Hope Memorial Humanitarian Award. In accepting the award, Cosby paid homage to the late Fred Rogers, the longtime host of the PBS children's show, "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."
