Russia delivers submarine for Vietnamese navy

The Vietnamese navy has received its sixth Russian-made submarine under a 2009 agreement.

Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The sixth and last diesel-electric submarine ordered by Vietnam from Russia under a 2009 agreement has been delivered by Rosoboronexport to the Hanoi government.

The Varshavyanka-class submarine -- designated as Kilo-class by NATO -- was transported from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Cam Ranh Bay in central Vietnam on a Dutch heavy load transport.

Varshavyanka-class submarines displace 3,950 tons when fully loaded and submerged. They are nearly 243 feet long, with a submerged speed of as much as 25 knots and a range 6,000 to 7,500 nautical miles.
