Z Microsystems displays for UAV system

SAN DIEGO, March 1 (UPI) -- Enhanced image displays for viewing video streams from U.S. small tactical unmanned aerial vehicles are being supplied by Z Microsystems.

The Intelligent Display Series employ high-powered FPGA to apply "image enhancement algorithms to incoming video streams without adding latency," which bring out the detail in images degraded by atmospheric interference or poor visibility.

The system will be used with the Integrator UAV supplied by Insitu Inc. The UAV system will be used on U.S. Navy amphibious ships to give intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to U.S. Marines.

"Z Microsystems' third-generation intelligent video processing engine is ideal for the environment that the Marine Corps will be operating in," said Bob Kopas, vice president of Military Programs at Z Microsystems.

"The Naval Surface Warfare Center selected Z Microsystems' displays after seeing how well they enhanced situational awareness and decision making with no added latency by clarifying images in fog, dust, sand, battlefield smoke and haze -- typical when operating in a littoral or combat environment."

The Navy last month tested the small tactical unmanned aerial vehicle system at sea from the San Antonio class amphibious transport dock following three months of land-based trial flights.
