MADRID, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Airbus Defence and Space successfully demonstrated the C295W medium transport as an aerial tanker, the company announced Wednesday.

Both crews reported smooth operation at various speeds.

The system is intended to refuel aircraft, helicopters and eventually drones. Potential future applications include special operations and extending search and rescue aircraft range.

Further trials with a helicopter receiver are planned before the end of the year.
