Compact radar system offers advanced capabilities against small targets of multiple types.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Saab has launched its land-based Giraffe 1X radar in the U.S. market, the company announced Monday.

The new, compact radar system offers advanced capabilities against small targets, along with the capacity to address multiple threat types, the company said in a statement.

The company also said it plans to transfer the system's intellectual property to its subsidiary, Saab Defense and Security USA, to meet the needs of the American market.

Officials said the move will accelerate U.S. troops fielding the capability while reducing cost and risk.

Giraffe 1X offers short-range air defense, sense-and-warn capabilities and counter-drone and counter-rocket, artillery and mortar functions.

It is mountable on vehicles, vessels and fixed installations.
