FARMINGDALE, N.Y., June 7 (UPI) -- Telephonics Corporation announced Tuesday it has been awarded a Saab contract for systems to be integrated into the Giraffe AMB radar platform.

The work, for an undisclosed amount, is for an initial order of Small Form Factor Identification Friend or Foe interrogator systems model SFF-44A.

The system provides a clear surveillance picture, supporting the user in making quick tactical decisions while protecting against air threats, Telephonics said.

The SFF-44A is a reduced size and weight that operates at a reduced transmitter power.

Its all-mode interrogator retains the key capabilities of Telephonics' AN/UPX-44A, the system currently employed globally on land, air and sea platforms.

Work will be done in New York with deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2017, the company said.

Saab's Giraffe AMB, or Agile Multi-Beam, radar provides short- and medium-range surveillance and ground-based air defense.

The system monitors 360 degrees for air targets while simultaneously locating and warning against incoming rocket, artillery and mortar rounds.
