MU90 torpedo operational with Australian Navy

PARIS, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- All Royal Australian Navy (RAN) frigates are now equipped with the MU90 lightweight torpedo following completion of firing tests, Thales announced.

The advanced anti-submarine torpedo was developed by EuroTorp -- a consortium between DCNS, Thales and Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei, a Finmeccanica company -- and is in service with the navies of France, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Poland.

It has a range of between 7.7 miles and 15.5 miles depending on speed, which can be more than 50 knots.

"The MU90 is a significant addition to the Royal Australian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capability," said Thales Australia Chief Executive Officer Chris Jenkins. "This is particularly important given the strategic significance of our maritime operational environment.

"We are very pleased that the torpedo has now entered active service, and we look forward to working closely with the DMO (Defense Materiel Organization) and RAN to support the weapon over the coming years."
