U.K. companies team for buoy contract

LONDON, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Babcock and SEA of Britain have teamed to win a government contract to produce a new submarine communications buoy demonstrator.

The buoy would be deployed on a future class of ballistic missile submarine that will replace Britain's Vanguard class. An invitation to tender to produce a technology demonstrator of the system is expected to be issued next month.

Babcock, which was involved the buoy's design and development, said the towed system will be capable of receiving very low frequency radio signals in all weather conditions and remain below the sea surface at a controlled depth.

Under the agreement project management, safety, design and manufacturing would be Babcock's responsibility, while Systems Engineering Assessment would be in charge of systems integration, systems engineering and simulation and validation.

"We are delighted to be teaming with SEA to bid for the SCB TDP," Babcock Future Business Development Manager James Date said.

"The Babcock-SEA team will combine Babcock's strengths in engineering design and manufacture with SEA's flair for innovation and technology insertion, offering the high level of experience and technical expertise required to meet the challenges and deliver the SCB TDP successfully.

"Babcock's work to date has already contributed significantly to understanding the issues and building a body of knowledge on which to base a future design. We look forward to working with SEA to bid for the TDP and continue our involvement in the SCB program."
