TEWKSBURY, Mass., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The first sale of the U.S. Theater High Altitude Area Defense missile system to a foreign country is a multimillion-dollar boon to Raytheon.
Raytheon reports it is to supply AN/TPY-2 radars, associated spares, training and other services through 2018 for the THAAD system sold by the Missile Defense Agency under a U.S. Foreign Military Sales deal.
"The AN/TPY-2 radar will provide the (United Arab Emirates) with unprecedented surveillance and defensive capabilities," said Dave Gulla, vice president for Global Integrated Sensors at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "With this contract, the (Emirates) becomes the first international customer to acquire the world's most advanced mobile radar, which better positions the Emirates to defend itself from threats."
The AN/TPY-2 is a solid-state, phased array X-band radar that detects threats and delivers the information to the system's fire control and communications elements.
Raytheon said suppliers from more than 30 states and its facilities in Massachusetts will be involved in the contract work.
Raytheon also reported a second MDA award – for two AN/TPY-2 radars for THAAD to the U.S. Army.
The award is worth $363.9 million.
