Advanced Firefinder radar system deployed

FULLERTON, Calif., June 8 (UPI) -- U.S. troops are deploying ThalesRaytheonSystems advanced Firefinder radars in the field.

The AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder Weapon Locating Radar system is being used by U.S. troops in Iraq, while upgraded AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder Weapon Locating Radar system are scheduled to be deployed in Afghanistan in the next several months, the company said in a news release.

"These RMI systems can be deployed with confidence for effective operations in challenging environmental condition," ThalesRaytheonSystems, U.S. Operations Chief Executive Officer Kim Kerry said. "The Firefinder modernization provides the U.S. Army and allies around the world with the capabilities needed for detection and troop protection."

The AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder Weapon Locating Radar system is designed to find enemy artillery, mortar and rocket firing positions while predicting impact zones and transmitting data, allowing time for effective counter-fire tactics.

Besides the U.S. military, nearly 400 AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder Weapon Locating Radar systems are deployed by an additional 18 countries worldwide.
