Y-12 Pantex Plant to see upgrade

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The Babcock and Wilcox Co. will continue management activities at one of the leading U.S. military nuclear facilities.

The awarded Babcock and Wilcox Co. contract extensions to manage and operate the Y-12 National Security Complex and Pantex Plant were reported by the company Friday. The company has been handling services at the plant for about 10 years.

Babcock and Wilcox Co. Technical Services Group, Inc. subsidiary President S. Robert Cochran said: "B&W is pleased to continue to provide management and operations services to these facilities and to serve the National Nuclear Security Administration's national security needs. Our operating groups have achieved excellent performance ratings at both the Pantex and Y-12 sites and we are confident we can continue to provide this high level of service to NNSA in the future."

The National Nuclear Security Administration's Y-12 facility works on both producing and refurbishing nuclear weapons components and the storage of nuclear material.

The Pantex Plant, near Amarillo, Texas, is responsible for nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly and maintaining the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.
