U.S. citizen jailed as N. Korean spy

SEOUL, April 16 (UPI) -- Even as Pyongyang remains a pariah in the international community, North Korea has been able to lure foreign spies to work for it, including U.S. nationals.

A Korean-American man was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison for spying for North Korea, court officials in Seoul said.

The Seoul Central District Court said it found Michael Jang, 44, guilty of providing confidential political and security information to the North in violation of South Korea's anti-communist National Security Law.

Jang was accused of holding unauthorized meetings with North Koreans, entering Pyongyang and possessing material praising the communist country, while receiving operational funds from the North.

The court also handed down jail terms of four to six years on four South Korean activists, including two members of the South's opposition and leftist Democratic Labor Party, for assisting Jang's espionage activities.
