Iran storing energy for winter

TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Tehran expects to have enough fuel in storage by November to last through the winter, an energy executive said.

Iran was forced to look to domestic resources in the face of economic pressure on its energy sector. International energy traders shied away from Iran during the summer when the United States and European Union rolled out new sanctions that target Iran's energy sector.

Farid Ameri, managing director at the National Iranian Oil Product Division Co., said there would be enough fuel in storage by November to satisfy commercial and industrial demand through the winter, the official Petroenergy Information Network reports.

Deputy officials in the Energy Ministry said fuel stocks were 20 percent higher now than they were at the same time last year. Power plants, ministry officials added, will have at least 45 days of fuel in storage and the industrial sector will have more than a month of fuel on hand.

Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Javad Oji said a second leg of a natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan and enhancements to gas pressure facilities would help the Islamic republic with its winter energy needs.
