Advisory issued for icing issues on Boeing Dreamliners

CHICAGO, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Boeing Co. and General Electric Co. notified 15 airlines this week to beware of potential icing on their new Dreamliner jets.

The BBC said Saturday the advisories refer to the potential ice buildup affecting GE GEnx engines on Boeing 747-8 and 787 Dreamliners.

The carriers were advised to avoid thunderstorms that might contain ice crystals while flying in the tropics.

There have been six reported incidents since April of GEnx engines losing power, the BBC said.

Although there have been no accidents, the problem was worrisome enough that Japan Airlines recently pulled the Dreamliner from its routes from Tokyo to Singapore and India.

The Dreamliner has waded through a series of technical issues since its debut but Boeing has continued to see brisk sales of the advanced airliner, the BBC said.
