DETROIT, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. automaker General Motors said it was ready -- almost -- to turn on the switch for production of its electrically powered Volt.

Production on the highly anticipated plug-in Volt would begin Nov. 10, Vice Chairman of Global Operations Tom Stephens said Tuesday. In roughly a month, the car would appear in dealers' showrooms, Stephens said.

The car, which will be produced at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, is expected to cost $41,000, The Detroit News reported.

Stephens said recharging infrastructure is also right around the corner. Utility companies DTE Energy and Consumers Energy have each said they would outfit 2,500 homes -- making a total of 5,000 -- with 240-volt charging stations. GM plans to install 350 more throughout the state of Michigan.

In addition, 1,500 dealerships will be outfitted with charging stations for Volt owners.

"We want to make it easy for our employees to also drive green," Stephens said.
