DETROIT, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A regulatory filing by U.S. automaker General Motors says the Chevrolet Volt runs up to 50 miles on an electric charge, an improvement over prior estimates.

Previously, GM said the Volt would get up to 40 miles on a battery charge. But a regulatory filing in anticipation of an initial public offering says the Volt will go 25-50 miles on electric power before a four-cylinder gas motor takes over, giving the car power for an additional 300 miles, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

Chevrolet spokesman Rob Peterson said the company may market the Volt with the higher estimate.

"We've had engineers do it. It's not a pipe dream," Peterson said.

The Volt is expected to hit showrooms in mid-November.
