Singapore to build two casino resorts

SINGAPORE, April 18 (UPI) -- Singapore's Cabinet has decided to legalize casino gambling and will seek bids to build two multibillion-dollar casino resorts.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told Parliament Monday the government had decided to approve the two integrated resorts to boost tourism and create jobs.

The government received 19 concept proposals from nearly every big name in the global casino business -- including Las Vegas giants Harrah's Entertainment Inc., MGM Mirage, Kerzner International Ltd. and Wynn Resorts Ltd.

While wanting to attract more tourists to Singapore, the government is wary of the social dangers of casinos. To dampen local casino demand, the government will stipulate that Singapore residents pay high entrance fees, Hong Kong newspaper The Standard reported. No casino advertising will be permitted in local media, and casino staff will monitor customers for signs of problem gambling.
