Fox tackles trade on South American tour

MEXICO CITY, July 6 (UPI) -- Mexican President Vicente Fox Tuesday began a tour of three South American countries including Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Analysts predict the goal of the tour to be a formal request for Mexico to take part in the common market consisting of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, known as Mercosur.

In the first stage of his tour, Fox has on his agenda a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Both presidents are revising sections of a bilateral trade agreement on social development and cooperation on energy issues between Mexico's Pemex and Brazil's Petrogas.

Fox will next travel to the Argentine province of Misiones to request the formal admission of Mexico into Mercosur, a scheme of integration and subregional cooperation that tackles themes like social development, justice, technology and others.

In the third part of the tour, Fox will visit Paraguay, where he will meet with President Nicanor Duarte and examine the bilateral trade agenda.
