NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks filled their need for a backup center Sunday by signing veteran forward-center Herb Williams to a multi-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

The 34-year-old Williams, who was an unrestricted free agent, flew with the Knicks to Portland and will be in uniform for Monday's game against the Trail Blazers.

To make room for Williams under the salary cap, New York reportedly restructured the contract of swingman Bo Kimble and to make room on the roster the Knicks placed Kimble on the injured list with bursitis in his right hip.

Williams, an 11-year NBA veteran, averaged 11.5 points and 6.1 rebounds in 75 games with the Dallas Mavericks last season. He spent his first seven seasons with the Indiana Pacers before he was traded to Dallas for forward Detlef Schrempf in February 1989.

The 6-foot-11, 242-pound Williams was the Pacers' first-round pick in the 1981 draft.
