'We had envisioned Ro finishing his career in Dallas,' said Rick Sund, Dallas' vice president of basketbll operations. 'But in the light of his age and our emphasis on developing young players, this trade is consistent with our current direction.'

The Knicks hope Blackman can fill a hole at shooting guard. New York also released 33-year-old forward Kiki Vandeweghe Wednesday.

Blackman, 33, was selected by Dallas as the ninth pick of the 1981 draft out of Kansas State. He averaged 19.2 points on .497 shooting in 34.3 minutes per game in his 11 seasons with Dallas.

Blackman scored 16,643 points, and is also the Mavericks' career leader in field goals (6,487), field goal attempts (13,061), free throws made (3,501), free throws attempted (4,166), starts (781) and minutes played (29,684).
