NEW ORLEANS -- Vince Tobin, who joined the New Orleans Saints only last Tuesday as defensive coordinator under new head coach Jim Mora, resigned Saturday to replace Buddy Ryan as the defensive coordinator of the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, according to Saints General Manager Jim Finks.

'We just assume he's going to take Ryan's job since that's the only position open with the Bears,' said Barra Birrcher, a spokesman for the Saints.

Ryan, credited with developing the '46' defense that made the Bears the most powerful defensive unit in the NFL, left earlier this week to take the head coaching position with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Saints now have two coaching position to fill: Tobin's spot and that of wide receiver coordinator.

Tobin, 42, joined the Saints Tuesday as one of Mora's eight assistants to move from the USFL Baltimore Stars.

A former defensive coordinator with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League, the Missouri native coached at the University of Missouri from 1967 to 1976 before joining the CFL.

Tobin spent three years with the Stars before coming to New Orleans.

NFL coaches and scouts were in New Orleans this weekend for the United Blesco Combine College Tryouts in which 300 of the top college athletes in the nation are invited to be screened for agility as potential professional players.

Birrcher said he was not sure whether Bears' Coach Mike Ditka was among the coaches at the Superdome or whether Tobin had been in touch with him there.
