MINEOLA, N.Y. -- A Long Island Sports Hall of Fame will be established to honor top athletes who lived on the island or who played sports on the island for at least three years.

Nassau County Executive Francis Purcell said Thursday the formal opening of the Hall of Fame will occur next month. The permanent display will be located on the lower level of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, home of the New York Islanders hockey team.

Purcell said 27 athletes initially will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They will include former Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown, Philadelphia 76ers star Julius Erving and former New York Yankees pitcher Whitey Ford.
