PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Maulers of the U.S. Football League have signed safety Jeff Delaney out of Pitt, team officials said.

Delaney, who was signed Tuesday, was a seventh-round draft choice by the Los Angeles Rams in 1979 and also played with the Baltimore Colts.

Delaney, who is studying to be a dentist, became a free agent at the end of last season aftr playing out his option with the Colts.

If he is ready to play in the Maulers' Sunday home opener against the Birmingham Stallions, Delaney could replace Dan Short, who had problems covering deep passes in Saturday's loss to the Michigan Panthers.
