SANTA FE, N.M. -- Princess Anne, visiting New Mexico on a goodwill tour, was surprised to learn she had become an aunt and replied 'oh good' upon hearing that her sister-in-law, Princess Diana of Wales, had given birth to a son.

Princess Anne of England was attending a reception at the College of Santa Fe's Greer Garson Theatre Center Monday when she heard of the birth.

The news apparently was a surprise to the31-year-old daughter of Queen Elizabeth II.

Asked for a comment on Diana's trip to the hospital, Princess Anne replied, 'Any word about Diana? I don't know. You tell me.'

Told the 20-year-old wife of Prince Charles had given birth to their first child, Princess Anne said, 'I didn't know she had one.'

And when someone in the crowd said it was a boy, she replied, 'Oh good.'

Princess Anne, who arrived in Santa Fe Monday for a two-day visit, was greeted at the airport by about 50 spectators. She was escorted to the College of Santa Fe by screen and stage star Greer Garson.

She attended an afternoon reception with Gov. Bruce King at the 310-year-old Palace of the Governors and was expected to dine later at a barbecue at the governor's mansion.

Princess Anne scheduled visits to two northern New Mexico pueblos today, in conjunction with the Save the Children Federation, of which she is president.

Before arriving in New Mexico, the princess spent five days in Colorado. She was shceduled to visit Houston later this week.
