Over 10,000 visit Walt Disney World on opening day

ORLANDO, Fla (UPI) -- The big five-wheeled steamer was cutting its way across Bay Lake under a midnight moon and Walt Disney World officials obviously were pleased.

They had entertained more than 10,000 persons at the opening of the $400 million tourist attraction without any serious problems and were looking forward to today's crowd doubling that.

The magic kingdom theme park, empty at midnight, was a dazzle of bright lights on the horizon.

It reminded Disney operations chief Dick Numis of the early days at California's Disneyland.

"God bless those sweet, loving people who paid their way in," said the Disney vice-president.

Yesterday's crowd was much less than many Orlando residents had been speculating.

It suited the Disney people, however, because they didn't want an overflow crowd until their personnel and equipment had been tested.
