Boyfriend rentals boom in China around holidays

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Women in China are renting boyfriends to attend family gatherings in order to avoid familial pressure to settle down.

Pressure on women in China to find men can be very intense so it is no surprise that during the largest public holiday in the country, the lunar New Year, the boyfriend business sees an uptick. The single women not only have to pay the rental fee -- which varies from man to man -- but they also have to pay for all the travel and accommodation costs, which can put the bill into the thousands.

Many women are expected to pay the high costs for men to pose as their love interest as they prepare to travel home for the holiday.
