Windows 9, codenamed Threshold, could be announced at Microsoft's Build developer conference in San Francisco in April, with a possible spring 2015 launch, according to Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott.

According to Thurrott, the Windows team plans to make the disclosure this April, after which there will be three Threshold test builds developed before the product is ready for manufacture next year.

The new launch is also an attempt by Microsoft to distance itself from Windows 8, which had its own share of problems with usability and a lack of apps at launch. Threshold will will feature the 2.0 version of Microsoft's "Metro" user interface and design language, said Thurrott.

Threshold will include updates for all three platforms it is used on: Xbox One, Windows and Windows Phones. It is not certain what details Microsoft will divulge about Threshold in April.
