Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt came close to filing for bankruptcy in 2011 after the Hills star spent $30,000 on plastic surgery the year before. In an interview with In Touch magazine the couple opened up about how they came to blow though $10 million.

“We were immature and we got caught up,” Pratt is quoted as saying in the latest issue of In Touch. “Every time we’d go out to eat, we’d order $4,000 bottles of wine. Heidi was going to the mall and dropping $20,000 to $30,000 a day. We thought we were Jay Z and Beyoncé.”

But having learned from their mistakes, Montag adds that things are different nowadays.

“Now I can spend like $100 at Victoria’s Secret. I feel like a different person,” she said.

Asked if they had regrets about participating in the popular MTV reality show, Montag said that even though the show was "a great experience" she is glad those days are long gone.

“I didn’t realize people would only know me as that character. It was just a persona I played up to make a paycheck,” she explains. "[The show] took a toll on my soul. I’m thankful not to have fake fights anymore!”

Regarding her relationship with former BFF Lauren Conrad, Montag said they two have spoken on the phone a few times since the show, but that she's not expecting an invitation to her forthcoming wedding.

Montag and Pratt will return to TV in the E! special After Shock: Heidi & Spencer, premiering Monday, Dec. 9.
