(UPI) -- Vivian Schiller, the chief digital officer at NBC News, has been hired as Twitter's head of news and will start the new job in January after finishing the year at NBC.

Schiller, who fittingly announced her new position in a tweet, will serve as the principle liaison between the social networking site and news organizations, in an effort to help Twitter become a more effective distributor of news information.

She joined NBC after two years as the fundraising chief at NPR, where her tenure was marked by controversy over comments made by then-senior news analyst Juan Williams and later when she was caught disparaging Tea Party members.

Schiller spent 15 years at CNN before moving to Discovery Times Channel and then to NYTimes.com from 2003 to 2006.
