Acapulco flooding: At least 42 dead, 40,000 stranded

Tropical Storms Ingrid and Manuel have killed 42 people and left 40,000 tourists stranded in Mexico.

Two simultaneous storms have affected two-thirds of Mexico killing at least 42 people.

Mexican authorities have declared a state of emergency in over 20 eastern Mexican towns after Tropical Storm Ingrid hit the Tamaulipas state.

The western state of Guerrero has also been allocated emergency funds after it was shaken by Tropical Storm Manuel causing severe flooding.

Manuel hit Mexico's Pacific coast on Sunday causing great devastation in the tourist town of Acapulco where at least 21 people have been killed and where 4,000 people are reportedly still in shelters.

According to Mayor Luis Walton, the closing of the city's airport has left 40,000 tourists stranded.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said Monday he would "arrange for governments funds to help" with the devastation.

State Governor Angel Aguirre said he would organize an air lift to transport basic goods into the city and get some of the stranded tourists out. In the meantime more than 20,000 people have been evacuated in the Gulf state of Veracruz after Ingrid hit on Monday. Twelve people died when a landslide near the town of Altotonga buried workers who were cleaning debris form a road.

Veracruz's civil protection authority said at least 20 highways and 12 bridges were damaged by the landfall.
