Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A tropical storm in the eastern Atlantic could become the first hurricane of the 2013 season, forming near the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's west coast and strengthening into midweek.

Warnings have been issued for the Cape Verde Islands as Tropical Storm Humberto moves north, expected to grow in intensity to become the first full-fledged hurricane of this year's late starting season.

As of midday Monday, Humberto's top winds were a relatively weak 45 mph, located 85 miles south-southwest of Fogo, the southernmost Cape Verde island, and moving west at 12 mph.

The storm was expected to turn northwest Tuesday, and slow even further.
