May 30 (UPI) -- Soon after Mariah Carey announced she would be leaving the hit singing competition after only one season, her fellow judge and occasional sparring partner, Nicki Minaj, also confirmed her departure in a Thursday night tweet.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that producers hoped Minaj would draw younger viewers to the struggling franchise, but that she only managed to turn off "American Idol's" older fans.

Randy Jackson announced earlier this month that "American Idol's" 12th season would be his last. The panel's most seasoned judge said he would part ways with the show last month, in a statement that featured one of his signature catchphrases.

"Yo! Yo! Yo!" he said. "To put all of the speculation to rest, after 12 years of judging on 'American Idol' I have decided it is time to leave after this season."

"American Idol's" judges table shake-up is part of the show's bid to reinvigorate its poor ratings.

"All four are gone," a source told TheWrap earlier this month. "They feel they've lost their core audience and they want it back."
