March 19 (UPI) -- Tom Cruise could add another super spy to his resume.

Warner Bros. is in talks with the "Mission: Impossible" star to take on a classic, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," to be directed by Guy Ritchie.

Cruise would star as Napoleon Solo, the Ian Fleming creation meant to be the small screen counterpart to James Bond, made famous by Robert Vaughn in the television show that ran from 1964 to 1968.

In "U.N.C.L.E.," the American Solo teams up with Illya Kuryakin, a Soviet, under the international organization, the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, to fight the evil forces of the world-conquering Thrush.

(Thrush is described as the creation of the creation of Sebastian Moran after the death of Professor Moriarty, of the "Sherlock Holmes" universe. Ritchie recently directed two "Sherlock" films for Warner Bros., and a third is in development.)

Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney were previously attached to the project, but Soderbergh left over budget disagreements and Clooney required surgery that would have kept him from a physical role.

Cruise is already one of Hollywood's busiest and highest-paid actors, and would be even more so if he adds "U.N.C.L.E." to his schedule. Another "Mission: Impossible" film is reportedly in the works, as is a sequel to last year's "Jack Reacher."
