E. coli death rate growing in Germany

BERLIN, June 12 (UPI) -- A hundred people are in critical condition in Germany due to E. coli infections, officials say.

There have been 4,000 cases of E. coli diagnosed or suspected in Germany, with the death toll there growing to 34 people, ITAR-Tass reported. The 100 people in critical condition need kidney transplants or long-term dialysis, the Russian news agency said.

The source of the outbreak, which also claimed one life in Swede, was confirmed Saturday as coming from sprouts cultivated on an organic farm in Lower Saxony, in northern Germany.

Russia has yet to remove its ban on European vegetables, however.

"The deliveries will start as soon as we coordinate the documents to confirm the security of foods. The ball is in Europe's court," said Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief public health official.
