ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 24 (UPI) -- Missiles fired from an unmanned aircraft killed at least 16 militants in northwest Pakistan Saturday, Pakistani officials said.

Pakistani security officials said at least five missiles fired from the drone struck a compound used by insurgents in South Waziristan near the Afghan border, the BBC reported.

Pakistani media indicated many others were injured.

Military leaders said South Waziristan is a sanctuary for al-Qaida and Taliban militants that officials say are responsible for attacks on international military personnel in Afghanistan.
