NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- Former House speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lead the list of Donald Trump's possible running mates, with more than a half dozen other possibilities, according to campaign insiders. Gingrich and Christie are submitting the paperwork the Trump campaign is asking for, with Gingrich getting heavy support from former Trump Republican presidential rival, Ben Carson.

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions and Tennessee Senator Bob Corker are also being vetted, but how much is not known. Another possibility is Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, however Pence is currently running for reelection.
Trump meets his goal of having a politically experienced person at his side if he choose Christie or Gingrich, but Christie -- currently the Trump campaign's transition chief -- has been damaged by a failed presidential run, which only drove his poll numbers down following the George Washington Bridge scandal that appeared to reveal the governor intentionally closing lanes on the bridge as political retribution. But Christie has been friends with the New York real estate mogul for over a decade.
Gingrich was an early defender of Trump on TV and is well-connected to Washington's leading lobbyists, but has also no one from the campaign has called him about a possible VP spot.
