Michelle Obama at SXSW: 'I will not run for president'

AUSTIN, Texas, March 16 (UPI) -- First lady Michelle Obama delivered a keynote address Wednesday at the acclaimed South by Southwest arts festival in Texas -- during which she stated she will not run for president at any point in the foreseeable future.

There hasn't been much speculation that Obama would ever run for the office her husband presently holds, but she addressed the subject during a panel discussion Wednesday.

"I have these two young [daughters] at home. Being the daughters of a president, just think about it. Not so easy. They handled it with grace and poise," she said. "I will not run for president."

Obama will leave the White House in January when the president's second term expires.

"Time is almost up," she said.

Wednesday's panel discussion included Obama, TV personality Queen Latifah, actress Sophia Bush, and musicians Missy Elliot and Diane Warren.

The women also discussed passion and expanding girls' education around the world as part of the Obama Administration's Let Girls Learn campaign, which assists and encourages adolescent girls in completing their schooling. The initiative's goal is to break down societal barriers to allow women and girls to pursue their individual educations.

Queen Latifah announced she will be joining the first lady via Twitter Monday saying, "I'll be at #SXSW with @FLOTUS talking about #62MillionGirls."

Sophia Bush also took to social media to share the news about her appearance alongside Obama.

"Check us out tomorrow. Queen Latifah. Diane Warren. Missy Elliot. And oh yeah, THE FIRST LADY!" she tweeted Tuesday.

Obama's remarks came amid a presidential campaign from one former first lady, Hillary Clinton, who is the Democratic front-runner to succeed President Barack Obama in the White House.

"There's so much more that I can do outside of the White House," Obama said. "I want to impact as many people as possible in an unbiased way."
