DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- An Ohio teacher will avoid jail time as part of a plea deal after admitting to sex with an underage student, lawyers in the case said.
Kelsey L. Hartmann, 28, had previously pleaded guilty to a single county of third-degree unlawful sexual conduct with a teenage boy, prosecutors said. She had initially been indicted on three felony counts of sexual battery of a minor by a teacher.
As part of her plea deal, Hartmann will have to register as a Level II sex offender, which will require her to register her address with the state twice a year for 25 years. She voluntarily turned in her teaching license. Other than that, she was sentenced to community control Monday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, the Dayton Daily News said.
The plea deal came at the request of the boy's family, which sought to avoid a trial.
Judge Michael Krumholtz said Hartmann was at a low risk to re-offend, adding community control was "the right thing."
Hartmann had been employed at Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio, when she was caught having sex with the teen, police said.
